Apps that Help Make Aging At Home Possible

We live in an age of technology.  A lot of the technology can be confusing and daunting for the elder generation, but some of it has proven extremely helpful with remaining at home longer.  Among the many apps that can be downloaded to a phone or tablet, there are apps that help with transportation, getting food, getting groceries, and getting other household needs met.  Here are a few examples:

  1. GrubHub, DoorDash, and UberEats: These apps allow customers to place food orders from hundreds of restaurants around them and have it delivered to them.  They have expanded the world of meal delivery from pizza restaurants to almost any restaurant you can think of.
  2. Instacart: Instacart began as a grocery delivery program and has now expanded from just grocery stores to pet food, office supplies, and specialty stores like Michaels.  Customers can shop virtually for what they need and it will be handpicked and delivered to them within an hour or two.
  3. Uber and Lyft: These apps coordinate rides for customers so that they can get from one place to another like appointments, stores, restaurants, pretty much anywhere you need to go, these apps can help you get there.
  4. GoodRx: This app is extremely important and helpful, especially for seniors in their coverage gap or who may be uninsured.  This app helps people purchase their medications from a pharmacy near them at a discount (usually a rather large discount) with the goal of making prescription medication more affordable and accessible to everyone.

All of these apps are open for everyone to use and can be downloaded to any phone.  They are free to use, though most offer a subscription option that will help secure more discounts.  They are great apps for anyone, but especially for seniors who are home alone and may need a little extra help when their loved ones and friends are busy.
